Algarrobina is a Peruvian superfood ingredient, and is the syrupy extract of the black carob tree, which is native to Peru. A natural sweetener, it’s rich taste and molasses-like consistency make it a popular topping for fruit salads, and it’s also used in drinks such as smoothies and even cocktails (where it’s superfood status is understandably offset by the pisco brandy!).
What benefits does it bring?
Algarrobina contains iron, calcium, phosporous, magnesium and potassium alongside vitamins A, B1, B2, and D. It contains between 5 – 8% protein, and is high in natural sugars; making it a great alternative to honey and even chocolate in recipes.
How do I use it?
It’s really up to you, as it can be used in a variety of ways.
We think it’s a great way to start the day and is easily incorporated into a breakfast routine. One of our favourite ways to use it is simply as a topping for muesli or other cereals; and the chocolatey flavour goes great with bananas too.
One of the most popular ways to use it are to add it to a smoothie or even an iced coffee. It’s so popular in Peru that Starbucks have even invented the Algarrobina Frappuccino just for the local market!
